James Hazel is an composer, artist and writer.

As someone who grew up in a social-housing community, James’s practice investigates the hauntings, spectres, vocalities, and ghostly refrains of neoliberal socio-structural precarity and working-class melancholia, approaching these concerns through the sonic as a form of radical sociological praxis.

James’ work and research unfold through precarious and transversal modes of collaboration and fabulated intervention—what he terms houso poetics.

Drawing on lo-fi, scored, and bricolage interventions, James engages documentary, community organising, ethnography, workshopping, pedagogy, critical fabulation, fieldwork, conversation, writing, song, and performance. Hazel’s projects span performance, instrumental and electronic music, and hinge’d forms across art, research, and collective practice.
